Are we tired of showmen yet?

| June 1, 2019

Watching he Greatest Showman in 2018 was a matter of reflecting on a disquieting juxtaposition: a spectacle celebrating a liberal outcome of the culture wars while a very illiberal administration governs the United States.

Everyone can be a showman now!

Everyone can be a showman now.

It also offer an interesting juxtaposition of our leading men: hucksters both, but with different politics. With fraud as a centerpiece, it was a case of art anticipating the inevitable mob-fueled argument, “You’re not perfect either.” Alas, the movie does not dwell on fraud, but rather how it can set in motion other projects and support values of any kind. Sigh.

Cultural chaos.
